This Privacy Policy explains what personal data Techne Skills ("we", "us", "our") collects about you when you use the techneskills.ai website, the Techne Skills CLI, and related services (collectively, the "Service"), how we use it, and your rights in relation to it.

This Privacy Policy should be read together with our Terms of Service.

1. Who we are

The Service is operated by Techne Skills, currently trading as a sole-trader operation in the United Kingdom.

The data controller for the personal data we collect is Techne Skills. You can contact us at hello@techneskills.ai.

2. What personal data we collect

We collect personal data in the following categories:

2.1 Account data

When you create an account, we collect:

  • Your email address
  • A password (stored only as a salted hash, never in plain text)
  • A display name and/or username you choose
  • An optional profile photo
  • An optional short biography

2.2 Purchase and transaction data

When you make a Purchase, we collect:

  • The Skill purchased and the Licence Tier
  • The price paid
  • The date and time of the Purchase
  • A pseudonymous identifier issued to your payment by Stripe
  • The licence key issued to you

We do not store your card number, CVV, or full bank-account details. Payment is processed by Stripe and we have no access to your underlying payment credentials.

2.3 Creator data

If you sell Skills, we additionally collect:

  • The Skills you submit, including their content, metadata, and any cover media
  • Information you provide to Stripe Connect for the purpose of receiving Payouts (Stripe collects this; we receive only what Stripe shares with us, typically a status flag and a pseudonymous identifier)
  • Records of Payouts and Sale Proceeds attributable to your account

2.4 Usage data

When you use the Service, we automatically collect:

  • IP address
  • Browser type and version
  • Device information (operating system, screen size)
  • Pages or routes visited within the Service
  • The date and time of access
  • The referring URL (if any)
  • Records of downloads, including the date, the source channel (web or CLI), the requesting user account, the licence key, and a device fingerprint hash where applicable

This usage data is used for service operation, security, and abuse prevention.

2.5 Communications

If you contact us by email, we retain the email and our response for record-keeping and ongoing support.

3. How we use your data

We use your personal data to:

  • Operate the Service, including creating and maintaining your account, processing Purchases, and delivering purchased Skills
  • Process Payouts to Creators
  • Communicate with you, including transactional emails (purchase confirmations, payout notifications), service notifications (terms updates, security notices), and (where you have opted in) marketing emails
  • Detect, prevent, and respond to fraud, abuse, security threats, and Terms violations
  • Comply with legal obligations, including tax, anti-money-laundering, and consumer-protection requirements
  • Improve the Service, including by analysing usage patterns

Our legal bases for processing under the UK General Data Protection Regulation are:

  • Contract performance: account data and purchase data, where processing is necessary to provide the Service you have requested
  • Legitimate interests: usage data, fraud-prevention data, and aggregated analytics, where processing is necessary for our legitimate interests in operating and improving the Service, balanced against your interests
  • Legal obligation: tax records, payout records, where required by law
  • Consent: marketing emails (where applicable), and any non-essential cookies (Section 7)

4. Who we share your data with

We share personal data with the following third parties, each in the role of a data processor unless otherwise noted:

4.1 Stripe

We use Stripe to process payments and to manage Creator Payouts (via Stripe Connect). Stripe receives the payment details you provide at checkout and the data Stripe Connect requires for identity verification and bank-transfer routing. Stripe acts as an independent data controller for the data it collects directly from you. See: https://stripe.com/privacy

4.2 Supabase

We use Supabase as our database and authentication infrastructure provider. Supabase stores your account data, content data, purchase records, and transaction history on our behalf, in EU-located data centres. See: https://supabase.com/privacy

4.3 Vercel

We use Vercel to host the techneskills.ai website. Vercel processes request data (including IP addresses) as part of serving the website to you. See: https://vercel.com/legal/privacy-policy

4.4 Sentry

We use Sentry to collect application error reports. When an error occurs in the Service, Sentry may receive a record of the error including (in some cases) a pseudonymous identifier for your account and details of the page or action that triggered the error. We do not send sensitive personal data such as passwords, card numbers, or skill content to Sentry. See: https://sentry.io/privacy/

4.5 Resend

We use Resend to send transactional emails (purchase confirmations, payout notifications, account notifications). Resend receives the email addresses of recipients and the contents of the messages sent. See: https://resend.com/legal/privacy-policy

4.6 Other disclosures

We may also disclose personal data:

  • To comply with applicable law, court orders, or legal process
  • To enforce these Terms or to protect the rights, property, or safety of Techne Skills, our users, or others
  • In connection with a corporate transaction (such as a merger, acquisition, or sale of assets), subject to appropriate confidentiality protections

We do not sell personal data to any third party.

5. Data retention

We retain personal data for the following periods:

  • Account data: while your account is active, and for 30 days after deletion (to allow for recovery of accidentally deleted accounts), after which it is permanently deleted
  • Purchase and Payout records: for 7 years after the date of the Purchase or Payout, to comply with UK tax and accounting record-keeping requirements
  • Usage data: for 12 months, unless required for a specific investigation or legal claim, in which case retained until the matter is resolved
  • Communications with us: for 3 years, for service quality and dispute resolution
  • Marketing consent records: for as long as you remain subscribed to marketing communications, plus 3 years after unsubscription

Records may be retained for longer where required by law, regulatory obligation, or pending legal claim.

6. Your rights

Under the UK GDPR, you have the following rights:

  • Right of access: you may request a copy of the personal data we hold about you
  • Right to rectification: you may request that we correct inaccurate or incomplete data
  • Right to erasure ("right to be forgotten"): you may request that we delete your personal data, subject to the retention obligations in Section 5

  • Right to data portability: you may request a copy of your data in a structured, commonly used, machine-readable format
  • Right to object: you may object to certain processing based on legitimate interests

To exercise any of these rights, contact us at hello@techneskills.ai. We will respond within one month of receipt of a valid request.

You also have the right to lodge a complaint with the UK Information Commissioner's Office (ICO) if you believe we have not handled your data correctly. The ICO can be contacted at https://ico.org.uk.

7. Cookies and similar technologies

The Service uses cookies and similar technologies for the following purposes:

7.1 Essential cookies

We use cookies that are strictly necessary for the operation of the Service, including:

  • Authentication cookies to keep you signed in
  • Session management cookies
  • Security cookies to detect abuse and protect against attacks

Essential cookies do not require your consent and cannot be disabled while using the Service.

7.2 Other cookies

We do not currently use analytics, marketing, or advertising cookies. If we begin to use any non-essential cookies in the future, we will request your consent through a cookie consent control before doing so, and update this Privacy Policy.

8. International data transfers

Most of our data processing takes place within the United Kingdom and the European Economic Area. Where we transfer personal data outside these regions (for example, to a US-based service provider), we rely on appropriate safeguards as required by UK GDPR, including the UK Addendum to the EU Standard Contractual Clauses, or equivalent transfer mechanisms.

9. Changes to this Privacy Policy

We may update this Privacy Policy from time to time. When we do, we will:

  • Update the "Last updated" and "Effective from" dates
  • Maintain a version history accessible from the legal pages of the website
  • Notify existing account-holders by email of material changes

Continued use of the Service after the effective date constitutes acceptance of the updated Privacy Policy. If you do not agree to the updated Privacy Policy, you must stop using the Service and may request deletion of your account.
